FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How often should I tune my piano?
Ideally, you would tune your piano twice a year. Typically, the change in humidity which occurs when temperatures drop in late fall and rise in the spring will cause instruments to fall out of tune, so it is economically wise to hire a tuner at those times.
What is a pitch raise and do I need one?
Pitch raises refer to the act of pulling a piano into tune at A=440 Hz, and are necessary when the piano is more than a quarter-tone flat. If your piano is extremely flat, it will require more time to get into shape, as well as a follow-up visit soon after the initial tuning. This is why it is important to follow a regular maintenance schedule, so that a pitch raise won't be necessary.
The need for this service is assessed in person, after consultation with the customer.
Should I buy a used piano I found on Craigslist?
It is always wise to hire a piano technician for assessment before you commit to buying a used instrument. I remember when I bought my first car, my friend, a mechanic, tagged along to make sure I wasn't buying a lemon. Problems that the customer may or may not be aware of can cost more money to fix than the piano is worth. As a buyer, you can play each key and make sure the pedals work before calling a technician; while you are shopping, this will help narrow your decision. A trained professional will look for deficiencies in the soundboard, case, tuning pin torque (which affects tuning stability), and action parts to make sure you are not looking at a big bill later on.
